Ayala Files Class Action Lawsuit Against Conmebol and Hard Rock Stadium Over Copa America Final Ticket Fiasco

By July 25, 2024No Comments

Ayala filed a lawsuit on behalf of its client against CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, and the Hard Rock Stadium over the events that led to thousands of ticket holders not being able to enter the stadium the day of the Copa America final between Colombia and Argentina.

On November 20, 2023, CONMEBOL and CONCACAF announced that the final game of the tournament will be held at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami-Dade. Tickets for the final match initially retailed for around $1,500. The plaintiff, an American citizen, U.S. military veteran, and resident of Miami-Dade County, flew members of his family from Colombia to attend the match. In total, the plaintiff bought 9 tickets for his family.

All nine family members arrived at Hard Rock Stadium around 4 p.m. on July 14, 2024. The plaintiff and his family waited around Hard Rock Stadium until about 7:00 p.m. when they tried to approach their assigned entry gate, Hard Rock Stadiumโ€™s SW gate. However, the family noticed that just an hour before the game, Hard Rock Stadium personnel kept the gates closed and kept the crowd from going inside the stadium and into the bleachers.

At around 7:30 p.m., the plaintiff saw an individual break through the security blockage and ran inside Hard Rock Stadium. Plaintiff did not see the Hard Rock Stadium security personnel swiftly manage the trespass. Soon after, the crowd rushed inside, bypassing security. The plaintiffโ€™s family resorted to fending off the familyโ€™s young children and waited for the rout to subside.ย As stated in the complaint, plaintiff โ€œstood and watched as the crowd tumbled and ran over various metal and hazard detection systems on their way inside Hard Rock Stadium.โ€

Eduardo A. Maura, managing partner at the firm stated, โ€œIt is such an unfortunate situation. The plaintiff spent thousands of dollars between flights and tickets to have an amazing family time at a sporting event. Instead, he and his family went through hell. The organizers should pay for the damages of all of those affected by this mismanagement.โ€
