Ayala Law Advances the Future of the Legal Profession Through Second Future Counsel Reception

By October 28, 2026No Comments

We recently hosted the second edition of the Future Counsel, our law student reception developed in collaboration with Florida International University College of Law, St. Thomas University College of Law, and the University of Miami School of Law.

The initiative reflects our firm’s commitment to investing in the next generation of attorneys by creating opportunities for law students to connect with practicing lawyers, ask candid questions, and gain a clearer understanding of the profession they are preparing to enter.

Beyond Networking: Giving Law Students Direct Access to Practicing Attorneys

This year’s reception expanded on the original event with two key components: an office tour of our Coral Gables headquarters and a panel discussion featuring partners Eduardo A. Maura, Orestes D. Garcia, and Ryan Sawal.

The office tour gave students an opportunity to experience the firm’s working environment firsthand, offering a closer look at the people and professional setting behind an established Florida business law practice.

The panel discussion provided a forum for students to ask questions directly to the firm’s leadership about the realities of practicing law, navigating career decisions, and building a sustainable legal career. Rather than limiting the evening to introductions and traditional networking, the Future Counsel encouraged substantive conversations between aspiring attorneys and lawyers with firsthand experience in the field.

Recognizing the Next Generation of Legal Talent

The students’ intelligence, initiative, and curiosity stood out throughout the reception. Their willingness to engage, ask thoughtful questions, and seek perspectives beyond the classroom demonstrated a genuine interest in understanding what it takes to succeed in the legal profession.

For Ayala Law, that initiative is precisely what makes these conversations valuable. Legal education provides the foundation, but exposure to practicing attorneys can help students better understand the judgment, discipline, professional relationships, and business considerations that shape a legal career.

Founder Eduardo A. Maura emphasized the importance of creating those opportunities: “Developing the next generation of attorneys requires more than waiting for them to enter the profession. We have a responsibility to invest our time, share our experience, and give aspiring lawyers access to honest conversations about what this career demands. The Future Counsel is one way we put that commitment into practice.”

Partner Orestes D. Garcia also highlighted the value of engaging with students who are actively seeking to learn: “The students brought an impressive level of curiosity and initiative to the reception. Their questions showed that they are thinking seriously about the profession and the kind of attorneys they want to become. Those conversations benefit students, but they also challenge practicing attorneys to reflect on the knowledge and experience we can pass along.”

Building Stronger Connections Between Law Schools and Legal Practice

By creating a setting where students can interact directly with practicing attorneys, we aim to strengthen the connection between legal education and professional practice. These relationships can help students explore different career paths, develop a broader understanding of the field, and begin building professional connections before graduation.

The second Future Counsel reception reinforces Ayala Law’s belief that shaping the future of the legal profession starts with engaging the people who will carry it forward. Future Counsel Future Counsel Future Counsel Future Counsel
